Colleges and Departments

The University of Cambridge is a confederation of Schools, Faculties, Departments and Colleges.

The Colleges are governed by their own statutes and regulations, but are integral to the make-up of the University.

Colleges

Students at Cambridge live, dine, and socialize within one of the University’s 31 Colleges, each offering a close-knit and supportive community. These Colleges provide undergraduates with College supervisions small-group teaching sessions recognized as one of the world’s most effective learning models.

While operating independently, each College follows University regulations and selects its own students. College representatives actively contribute to University decision making through their roles on the University Council.

Departments

The University is organized into six Schools, serving as administrative hubs for various Faculties and institutions. These Schools are: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology.

Each School has its own Council, bringing together representatives from its Faculties and Departments to ensure collaboration and effective governance. The Schools also have a voice in shaping the University’s academic policies through their representation on the General Board.
